Parisian Food (by Z)

From the moment we arrived in Paris, we saw bakeries (boulangeries) everywhere. On almost every street, there’s a shop with pastries and bread to takeaway for breakfast, or a snack. Throughout our time in the city, these places became a go-to stock for reliably good (& quick) food, most notably bread to eat by itself or with cheese. Most supermarkets also have a large stock of nice cheese and bread as well, but bakeries are a quality choice for the bread we were looking for, and as common as supermarkets in France.

There were so many cheeses to try in Paris, not just the ones Australia is used to, but some mouldy and strong enough that you can’t eat the rind! Many times we went to cheese shops to have types like brie, goats cheese and other cheeses with bread, as well as ordering our fair share when we went out for food.

We went to a cheese “museum” (more a shop with a tour) and learnt how to cut a brie properly to everyone gets both the “heart” and the rind in each piece:

Walking around Paris, there are also lots of creperies and Italian restaurants. The pizza in France is supposed to be nearly as good as in Italy! When we did go try some, it was very good, and it’s good to get some if you have the chance. Crepes in France are abundant and also delicious, with choices between savoury and sweet ones for a main and dessert at most creperies. The savoury ones usually include toppings like salmon, cheese and salad, while the dessert ones we are used to contain things like chocolate, sugar and honey.

When you go out to eat in France, the selection of dishes on the menu differs from other places around the world. The French are known for the meat they eat that is unusual compared to the things we’re used to. Menus will have things like snails, frog legs, and even sea urchins – we were all skeptical to try it, but frog legs are supposed to be similar to the textures of chicken and fish.

Overall, Paris was a great place to visit in terms of food, and we would go there again!
