French delicacies

France does bread and cheese so well (insert chef’s kiss x 100 here) and we did our best to try as much as we could. (Doing our Australian heritage proud I tell you!) There is just sooo much choice, even in the supermarket.

A common lunch for us was a baguette (or two) and some brie (or goats’ cheese). We didn’t always have a knife but as it turns out, the edge of a crunchy baguette does the job nicely 🔪🥖 as Esti demonstrates below (with help from M, not having opposable thumbs is one of the downsides of being a rabbit):

One of my fave finds was this baby & parent Langres – a brand which you can get back home 🙌 but not in the big size alas. I mean, what’s wrong with 1kg of cheese? Someone in Australia is judging me and I don’t like it 😜

And the choice of bread is wonderful too – and baked fresh each day. We heard that there is some French law about everyone having a boulangerie within a certain distance of their house. I am not sure if that is true or not but even in the smallest towns you’d always have at least one and in the cities you never had to walk more than a few minutes. If you were lucky, you got them while they were still warm 🤤

And don’t tell anyone, but one time we did stoop to the 24 hour baguette machine…

It was decent but not great. It does come out warm though!

Then there’s the pastries, which can be pretty impressive too…

And, I couldn’t write a post about French delicacies without mentioning the wine. Cheap and (generally) lovely and you’re spoilt for choice – see Exhibit A 👇

If you’d like a reminder of what we found in a local Paris market check this post out or if you want Z’s take on Parisian food look here. Food may be a theme for us on this trip!
