Tropea (AKA onion town)

Next stop on our journey south was the town of Tropea. A very pretty beach side town, with the main old town perched up the top of the cliff. It was a fair bit busier than where we’d been in the Cilento Coast, with the main viewpoint was quite popular with tourists from all over the world. Personally I suspect the €2 beers might have been a major factor, but to be fair, the view was pretty awesome too…

Again, we did not venture into the water but the last few sun loungers for the season were there for us if we wished and the water was a beautiful shade of blue…

Tropea also has a wonderful old town, with delightful squares, alleyways and sea glimpses – plus the occasional vintage Fiat to add to its charm!

Also, as you might imagine, the food is great too. The arancini (deep fried rice balls with various fillings) here were great (ssh, don’t tell Sicily):

The local dessert of tartufo was great too – double gelati with a liquid centre 🤤

And I could not talk about Tropea without mentioning its famous red onions. We unfortunately (or not…) missed Onion Island (Awaji) in Japan but we made it to Onion Town in Italy! Go team! 🧅🤣 I may have made M pose with a few onion related things during our stay, but at least I did not make him try the onion gelato.

I didn’t go there either to be fair – the tartufo had filled me up already after all…
