Planes, trains and automobiles

Our transport method on the trip was varied, so we had a few interesting experiences with different methods of transportation.

We tried not too fly too often, but when we did, it was often a last minute ticket – meaning we often flew with budget airlines. Jetstar, Air Asia, Ryanair, Lion Air, Lao Airlines and Scoot were all sampled. Some were better than others! Some nice views down below sometimes left us wishing we were on the ground below rather than being inside a flying sardine tin!

Trains were a highlight in Japan, where we got to ride on the Hello Kitty themed shinkansen and also took a ride on a train with a zen garden inside its carriage. Indonesia currently has the 3rd fastest train in the world (named Whoosh) which took us to Jakarta at speeds up to 350 km/h! The trip was over almost before it began.

Travelling on two wheels was one of my favourite things on the trip. Fantastic adventures included riding around a lake near Mount Fuji, mountain biking along muddy tracks in Scotland and riding along cobbled lanes in an old town in the Netherlands to buy some beer!

Boat trips can be great or torturous, depending on the conditions! I’m always happy to disembark 😁

Driving a car around Europe and the UK took us to some amazing places, they were sometimes a bit unexpected! One of my favourites was having the chance to drive through a medieval town centre in France – along a single lane stone bridge, through a gate in the city wall and along narrow cobbled roads. You just don’t get that at home!

Tuk tuks were a common sight in a few countries we visited in Asia. We just did short trips in them, but still managed a few unique experiences on board… One ride was pumping out Justin Bieber on the way home, much to the kids disgust!

We also saw a few odd / interesting sights on our travels. Swiss tanks, French tractors, farmers and monks packed into a songthaew. What a ride!
