Udaipur food

We ate well in Udaipur: it definitely caters to more tourist taste but we also got some great Indian food, including a butter chicken the kids liked at a dingy, smoky cafe/bar a couple of minutes walk from our accommodation. Mike and I also liked that place because the staff told us you could get beer too – not on the menu sneakily – but very welcome after a fairly dry spell. They don’t seem to do much alcohol here?Β

Tip view of rice, beer, butter chicken and another curry I forget (but yummy!)

One night we had dinner at a more upmarket place on the lakeside and I got a half decent pizza. It’s not Est Ovest obviously, but I spotted the wood fired oven so thought I’d give it a goΒ and was pleasantly surprised.Β

We also discovered poha – a smashed rice breakfast dish – from the samosa place right below our accommodation. Not spicy (avoid the big green chillis!), just kind of fresh tasting – quite nice!Β

We are at a rooftop restaurant for one sunset and finally decided to try the “Hello to the Queen” desert (sic) that we’d seen on a few menus. It’s like a nut sundae with bananas but with crumbled up biscuits as well. Quite nice but I do wonder if they need to change the name now? πŸ€”πŸ˜‰ (didn’t post a pic of the dessert but got loads of the sunset)

The kids discovered momos (basically dumplings) somewhere in Chennai and they’ve become a firm favourite but you never know how spicy they will be. Luckily many things in India are veggie so you generally can’t go too wrong if you skip the suspiciously red sauce – and not too much onion so M is happy. Momos are such a favourite we have now rewritten the Machine Gun Fellatio lyric from “The girl of my dreams is giving nightmares” to “The girl of my dreams is giving me momos” which is just so much nicer don’t you think? 🀣

And we ventured away from the mango lassi to pineapple and even just the plain sweet which was also really good. Mmm I could go one of them now πŸ˜‹

At one “Clouds” cafe we tried to get their “Special Lassi” – which we thought was mixed fruit. When the guy served it to Z he said it was “not for kids”. After a bit of back and forth it seemed that is contained marijuana – probably explains why it tasted so bad (adults only tried it!). We made a hasty exit…

The kids have done really well with trying new foods, it’s been a huge leap for them and they’ve dived in. Hopefully it sticks back home 🀞
