TeamLab Planets

TeamLab (the folks who did the Osaka Botantical Gardens display) do a few more interactive art pieces, including Planets in Tokyo (there’s also Borderless but we only had time for one). Spoiler alert: I didn’t like this as much as the former (partly due to the crowds) but it was still pretty.

My favourite section was the Infinite Crystal Universe which, as you might imagine, was very sparkly 🤩 Strings of ever-changing coloured lights hang from the ceiling and the walls, floors and ceiling is mirrored so it seems to go on forever. However, you were forced to keep moving slowly and I missed the side part where you were allowed to stop 😔

For most of the artworks you are shoe-less and, in one, walking in calf-deep water. They do have you walk through a “waterfall” to help clean all the feet before you get into any of the exhibits, but I would still suggest that earlier in the day is better if you’re feeling a bit icky about all those feet!

Some of the exhibits were to challenge you to walk on uneven / wobbly surfaces, often in dimly lit conditions, so at one point we were in a room of soft cushions with bean bag walls:

The water feature was a room with koi (ornamental carp) projected onto the water with petals which float around you. A nice effect with the mirrored walls but difficult to capture in a picture.

Some more interactive pieces included a slide (not pictured), wobbly suspended stairs, trampolines, uneven surfaces and soft stepping stone paths. All beautifully lit with creatures and flowers that interacted with you as you moved.

In one room, you lie down looking up at a ceiling of ever moving flowers. (Be warned – you may feel VERY dizzy unless you are lying down!)

There is also a mirrored, hanging garden which looked cooler in the pictures than it actually was (again, this may be partly crowd related).

There was also a new “catch and collect” section where, if you had their app, you could try to “catch and collect” extinct/endangered animals as they walked/ran/flew through the forest. Of all the times we were encouraged to download their app, I think that this one would have been actually worthwhile, at least for the kids.

So there was definitely more to do than the Osaka Botantical Gardens display but the stunning glowiness of the eggs in Osaka was still my absolute fave!
